 「お香の日」の起源
　4月18日は「お香の日」として、1992年に全国香物線香組合協議会によって制定
されました。その起源は、日本書紀に記された推古天皇3年（595年）4月の出来事
に由来します。
　淡路島に大きな香木（沈香じんこう）が漂着し、島人が燃やしたところ素晴らし
い香りが広がったため、朝廷に献上されたという故事です。
　また、「香」という漢字を分解すると「一・十・八・日」と読めることも、4月18日
が選ばれた理由の一つとされています。
　この「お香の日」は、日本の豊かな香文化の魅力を広め、より多くの人々に親しん
でもらうことを目的としています。
　香道とは - 香りを聞く日本の伝統文化
　香道（こうどう）は、日本に古くから伝わる伝統的な芸道の一つで、香木（こう
ぼく）などの自然の香りを鑑賞し、精神的な安らぎや豊かな時間を楽しむものです。
単に「嗅ぐ」のではなく、心を澄ませて「聞く」と表現されるのが特徴です。
　香道は、室町時代の東山文化において、足利義政や公家の三條西実隆、武家の志野
宗信らによって体系化されたと言われています。
　現在では、「御家流」と「志野流」という二つの主な流派がその伝統を継承しています。
　御家流: 華やかな蒔絵の香道具を用い、伸びやかで自由な作法が特徴で、香りやその
場の雰囲気を楽しむことを重視します。主に貴族や公家の間で発展しました。
　志野流: 素朴な木地の香道具を用い、簡素ながらも厳格な作法が特徴で、精神修養と
しての側面も持ち合わせています。主に武家の間で発展しました。
　香道の具体的な作法と楽しみ方
　香道には、いくつかの形式がありますが、代表的なものに「聞香（もんこう）」と
「組香（くみこう）」があります。
　聞香（もんこう）
　一人または数人で、炷かれた香木の香りを順番に「聞く」形式です。
　基本的な作法:香炉の扱い: 香炉が回ってきたら、右手で受け取り、左手のひらに
乗せ、軽くおしいただきます。
　香りの聞き方: 香炉の正面を少し外し、右手で筒を作り香炉を覆うようにして、
静かに香りを「聞」きます。この際、香炉を傾けすぎないように注意します。一般的
に、深く息を吸い込み、香りを３回ほど味わいます（三息さんそく）。
　次の方へ: 香りを聞き終えたら、香炉を元の正面に戻し、丁寧に次の方へ回します。
　楽しみ方のポイント:
　五感で味わう: 香りの質や 広がりなどを、五感を研ぎ澄ませて感じてみましょう。
　情景を想像する: 香りから連想される情景や感情を心の中で描いてみるのも、深い
楽しみにつながります。
　静寂を楽しむ: 香りの広がる静かな空間そのものを味わい、心静かに過ごす時間を
大切にしましょう。
　組香（くみこう）
　数種類の香木を用意し、それらを組み合わせて、香りの異同を当てたり、テーマに
沿って香りを鑑賞したりする、一種のゲームのような形式です。
　基本的な流れ:
　試香（しこう）: まず、出題される香りの種類を確かめるために、それぞれの香りを
試聞します。
　本香（ほんこう）: テーマに沿って炷かれたいくつかの香りを順番に聞き、その種類
や順番などを記憶します。
　解答: 聞いた香りの印象や、試香との比較などに基づいて、用意された記紙（きし）
に解答を記入します。
　採点・講評: 香元（こうもと：香を炷く人）が解答を回収し、採点や香りの解説を
行います。
　楽しみ方のポイント:
　記憶と集中力: 香りの 聞き分け、記憶する力を養います。
　連想力と表現力: 香りから受ける印象を言葉で表現したり、テーマに沿った連想を
楽しんだりします。
　交流を楽しむ: 他の参加者と感想を共有したり、解答について語り合ったりするのも
醍醐味の一つです。
　香道は、日本の豊かな自然や文化、そして人々の繊細な感性を映し出す、奥深い世界

Origin of "Incense Day"

April 18th was established as "Incense Day" by the National Council of Incense and Incense Stick Associations in 1992. Its origins date back to an event recorded in the Nihon Shoki in April of the third year of the reign of Empress Suiko (595).

The story goes that a large piece of fragrant wood (agarwood) washed ashore on Awaji Island, and when the islanders burned it, a wonderful fragrance spread, so it was presented to the Imperial Court.

Another reason for choosing April 18th is that the kanji character for "incense" can be broken down to read "ichi, ju, hachi, nichi."

The purpose of "Incense Day" is to spread the appeal of Japan's rich incense culture and to make it familiar to more people.

What is Kodo - A Traditional Japanese Culture of Listening to Scents

Kodo is one of the traditional arts that has been passed down in Japan since ancient times, and involves appreciating the scents of nature such as fragrant woods, and enjoying spiritual peace and a rich time.

It is characterized by the expression of "listening" with a clear mind, rather than simply "smelling".

Kodo is said to have been systematized by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the noble Sanjonishi Sanetaka, and the samurai Shino Munenobu during the Higashiyama culture of the Muromachi period.

Today, two main schools, the "Goie School" and the "Shino School", carry on the tradition.

Goie School: Uses gorgeous incense tools with lacquer enamel, is characterized by a relaxed and free style, and places importance on enjoying the scent and the atmosphere of the moment. It developed mainly among aristocrats and nobles.

Shino School: Uses simple wooden incense tools, is characterized by a simple but strict style, and also has an aspect of spiritual training. It developed mainly among samurai.

Specific etiquette and how to enjoy Kodo

There are several forms of Kodo, but the most common are "Monko" and

"Kumiko".Monko

In this form, one or several people take turns "listening" to the scent of the burned incense wood.

Basic etiquette: Handling the incense burner: When the incense burner is passed around, receive it with your right hand, place it on the palm of your left hand, and press it lightly.

How to listen to the scent: Hold the incense burner slightly away from the front, make a tube with your right hand to cover the incense burner, and quietly "listen" to the scent. Be careful not to tilt the incense burner too much. Generally, you take a deep breath and savor the scent three times (sansoku sansoku).

To the next person: When you have finished listening to the scent, return the incense burner to its original front and carefully pass it to the next person.

How to enjoy:

Use your five senses: Sharpen your five senses to feel the quality and spread of the scent.

Imagine a scene: Picture in your mind the scene or emotion that the scent evokes, which will lead to deeper enjoyment.

Enjoy the silence: Enjoy the quiet space where the scent spreads, and cherish the time you spend in peace.

Kumiko: This is a kind of game in which several types of incense wood are prepared and combined, and participants try to distinguish the differences between the scents or appreciate the scents according to a theme.

Basic flow:

Shiko: First, try each scent to determine the type of scent that will be asked.

Honkou: Listen to several scents in order according to a theme, and memorize the type and order.

Answer: Write your answer on the provided notepad based on your impression of the scent you heard and how it compares to the sample scent.

Grading and Commentary: The incense burner (the person who burns the incense) will collect the answers and grade and comment on the scents.

How to Enjoy:

Memory and Concentration: Cultivate the ability to distinguish and remember scents.

Association and Expression: Express in words the impression you get from the scent and enjoy making associations based on the theme.

Enjoy Communication: One of the highlights is sharing your impressions with other participants and discussing your answers.
