2％という小さな確率～A small probability of 2%

 欧州宇宙機関（ESA）は、「2032年に、小惑星が 2％の確率で地球にぶつかるかもしれない」と言っています。 
2％というのはとても小さな確率ですが、気になる数字ではあります！  

〇小惑星ってなに？
　小惑星は 宇宙にある大きな石や岩のかたまりのことだよ。 
　ときどき、こうした小惑星が地球の近くを通ることがあるんです！  

〇過去に小惑星が地球にぶつかったことは？
　地球には 昔から何度も小惑星がぶつかった記録があります。 
　大きな衝突の例をいくつか紹介します。 
　① 恐竜が絶滅した小惑星 約6600万年前） 
　　今から 6600万年も前、直径10kmくらい の大きな小惑星がメキシコの近くに
　　落ちました。 
　　その衝撃で 大きな爆発と火事が起こり、黒い雲におおわれ、太陽の光が地上に
　　届かなくなりました。 
　　この影響で 恐竜たちが絶滅したと言われていわれています。

  ② ロシア・ツングースカ大爆発（1908年）
　　今から 100年以上前の1908年 に、ロシアのツングースカという場所で、小惑星
　　か彗星が空中で爆発しました。 
　　この爆発で何万本もなぎ倒され、すごい衝撃波が広がりました。 
　　しかし、人口が少ない地域だったので、人への被害はほとんどなかったようです。 

　③ ロシア・チェリャビンスク隕石（2013年）
　　2013年には、ロシアのチェリャビンスクという都市の上空で直径約20mの小惑星
　　が爆発しました！
　　その爆風で建物のガラスが割れ、1000人以上が怪我をしました。 

〇2％の確率って、どれくらい？ 
　2％というのは、100回に2回起こるくらいの確率です。  逆に、まだ98％はぶつか
　らないということです！  しかし、小惑星の進む道はちょっとした影響で変わること
　があるから、科学者たちは 注意深く観察ようとしています。 
　新しいデータが集まると衝突する確率がもっと低くなったり、逆に高くなったり
　することもあります。

　However, since the area was sparsely populated, there was little damage to people.

③ Chelyabinsk Meteorite, Russia (2013)

In 2013, an asteroid about 20m in diameter exploded in the sky above the city of Chelyabinsk, Russia!

The blast shattered glass in buildings and injured more than 1,000 people.

How much is a 2% probability?

2% is about 2 chances in 100. On the other hand, that means there is still a 98% chance that it won't hit! However, because the path of an asteroid can change with even the slightest influence, scientists are trying to observe it carefully.

As new data is collected, the probability of a collision may become lower or higher.
